Summary

The Constructing Excellence Sustainability Team has been working with the MSC project since July 2007 and work is ongoing. This summary deals with the recent delivered output which forms part of the ongoing work.

The Manufacturing Sustainable Communities (MSC) project is a pioneering collaborative project aimed at creating a viable locally-based, innovative and sustainable manufacturing supply base for the Off Site Manufacturing (OSM) market whilst simultaneously contributing to the economic regeneration of London's most needy areas. The Barriers to Sustainable Procurement in the Construction Industry project utilised the Constructing Excellence membership outreach to conduct a study exploring the barriers to the procurement of sustainable products, materials and components in the construction industry and identified areas where improvements could be made without negatively impacting on business performance.

The study looked at the relationship between sustainable procurement and value for money to establish whether these are complementary or conflicting, while considering attitudes to, and awareness of, sustainable procurement practices

This study took the form of around 30 telephone and face to face interviews dealing with the following issues:
