Working Environment

At a basic level, a good working environment means providing shelter, eating areas and changing space, written terms of service, pay and pension provisions. Attention to the working environment has been shown to reduce staff turnover and absence and increase motivation.

The working environment in its broadest sense includes the working conditions on and off site, communications, culture and behaviour issues.

The physical environment in which people are expected to work tells them a lot about how important they are in the eyes of their employers. Some of the best construction sites have working environments that exceed those found in many offices though these are still rare, unfortunately.

Engaging employees specifically and directly in identifying issues, concerns and solutions related to their working environment demonstrates mutual respect. (see workforce engagement and satisfaction).
