Department of Trade and Industry - Study

The DTI is keen to share 'best practice' in all commercial sectors - not least, in the construction industry. Through it's Partners in Innovation Scheme (Pii), the DTI helps fund research into how new methods of working can be applied, in collaboration with commercial organisations and sometimes, professional research bodies or academic institutions.

Wilson James Ltd., as lead partner, joined with both Mace Ltd. and BAA to conduct a one-year study. Other significant contributions came from Transport for London, University of Glamorgan, Constructing Excellence and the Stockholm Logistiks Centre. The central focus of the study was to discover how the methodology and lessons learned from having set-up and operated a Consolidation Centre for two years, could be adapted, enhanced and deployed to major construction projects across the construction industry.

A full-time researcher was engaged to conduct a meticulous programme including a great many stakeholder interviews, comparative study, examination of processes, information technology, resources and much more besides.

In the autumn of 2004, these findings were published and are now freely available to interested parties. You can download the Executive Summary of this report by clicking here.
