Conference: Designing the Future
Venue: Coton House, Rugby

February 5th & 6th, 2002

Aims:

To "design the future" of construction in the UK by developing and exploring alternative scenarios. These scenarios was used to support strategic planning of both business and research programmes.

Objectives:

The objective of the first day was to identify current best thinking on the likely key influences and drivers of change for the industry. Leading edge thinkers addressed the conference through the following topics:

  • Commercial context, ie business/finance/insurance;
  • Social context/environmental issues;
  • Human resources in the construction industry;
  • Future clients; who will they be and what will they want?;
  • IT and technological development in both the building product and the delivery process.

The objective of the second day was to generate alternative industry scenarios. Participants were activelyinvolved in creative workshops facilitated by scenario planning experts in the Innovation Lab, a purpose-built Consignia facility for this type of work.
