Construction Lean Improvement Programme (CLIP)

If you are in construction, the Construction Lean Improvement Programme - CLIP is your prime opportunity to boost business performance by making sure you've got your operations optimised to give better productivity and efficiency.

CLIP aims is to help the UK construction industry be more profitable by improving its efficiency, its quality and its competitiveness, and to deliver a better service to its customers. We provide the knowledge and practical skills needed to make change happen and to bring about real business benefits. We have developed a new approach to boosting performance, based on targeting inefficiencies in the site operation and other related activities - CLIP.

CLIP is for you if you would like to:

How can you do this?

World class companies in all business sectors base their approach on achieving high levels of customer satisfaction, by improving quality, cost and delivery of their product or service. To do this they adopt a "lean" approach.

What is lean?

It's not about trimming everything to the bone and squeezing more out of what's left. It's about working smarter, not harder. Lean is about achieving a balanced use of people, materials and resources to give the lowest cost, to eliminate waste and to deliver on time. Other industries applying lean regularly achieve productivity improvements in excess of 20%.

Leading companies think "lean"

"We are impressed by the dramatic success being achieved by leading companies that are implementing the principles of "lean thinking" and we believe that the concept holds much promise for construction as well"

Rethinking Construction: The Report of the Construction Task Force, 1998

Does it work in the construction industry?

Yes! CLIP has adapted lean tools and techniques for use in construction. We tested them on seven real construction projects around the UK. The results were dramatic, productivity improvements of up to 50% in key processes were achieved. The results of the pilot project were published in the CLIP booklet 'Profit from Process Improvement'. Since then, CLIP has worked with over 80 companies and has produced a second booklet of eleven case studies where construction contractors, product manufacturers and suppliers have benefited from the CLIP process. How does CLIP work?

The central feature of the Programme is the Process Improvement Masterclass. A lean expert works with your team to make practical improvements and to train them by example - its not learning in the class room - in this way results are immediate and directly related to need. The Masterclass approach can be applied to any process in construction - specification, design, procurement or site operations (in the pilot tests we have demonstrated that it works well even on the minute to minute detail of site operations).
