BUSINESS development manager at Severfield-Reeve Projects (SRP), Thirsk, Paula Stewart, has been appointed the first woman chairman of a Constructing Excellence club in England.
Paula Stewart, 37, will chair the steering committee for the North Yorkshire Constructing Excellence Club, during her year-long tenure. She succeeds Colin McNeil of the Kier Group, Boston Spa, near Wetherby.
The North Yorkshire Constructing Excellence Club, set up in May 2003, has several major construction company commitments in the form of membership as well as over 50 SME members across the county. The North Yorkshire club purpose is to continually drive Constructing Excellences' aims and objectives to the industry in the form of regular best practice seminars throughout the year and to ensure members have access to the Constructing Excellence central information hub.
The club itself has raised it's profile during the past 12 months. One of these areas is the improvement of communication and customer service by asking its members what type of seminar topics would they like to see in the future. And, an example of this exercise is at a recent seminar in January at York, which discussed key performance indicators and benchmarking, fronted up by Peter Cunningham of Constructing Excellence, Paul Senior of Keepmoat and Andrew Moore of Transform Business Improvement (Sheffield), was attended by 72 industry related professionals.
Paula joined SRP in July 2004 after 12 years' business development experience in different sectors of the construction related sectors including specialist plant hire, manufacturing of electrical cable and pipe fixings and metering & measurement software for the oil & gas industry.
She says: "North Yorkshire has huge development potential and construction businesses in the county have a strong sense of community which creates a good platform for developing the club. I am delighted to have been appointed as chair and look forward to moving the club forward by increasing awareness of what we are trying to achieve, to target the benefits of membership more thoroughly to prospective businesses and concentrate on getting the message across to more remote areas of the county."
Don Ward, Chief Operating Officer - Constructing Excellence visited the Yorkshire & Humber region on 2nd February 2006 and delivered a presentation on the workings of Constructing Excellence.
"One company's waste is another company's feedstock". This doesn't fully reflect the breadth of the NISP programme, which is dedicated as much to optimising utility systems, manufacturing capacity and resources in the broad sense as well as it is to materials, but it does give a starting point as to what NISP is about, says Programme Director Malcolm Bailey.
Within the overall programme we are actively developing supply chains for recyclates. Our strength is in being a cross sector organisation but there is no doubt that the construction industry is vital to this and the Yorkshire & Humber team is looking to further develop relationships with the industry.
Many of the materials that NISP Yorkshire & Humber have on the books, totalling over 1million tonnes, may be considered as aggregate replacement or have appropriate constituents for inclusion in bricks, paving or cement. Other material e.g. PVC is available for use in development of roofing/waterproofing products etc... Alternative fuel is also an area that is taking off as energy prices climb. There may also be materials or services you wish to supply; either way it would be good to contact us.

How does the programme operate? Without doubt the most fruitful activities are the distinct range of workshops that the Yorkshire & Humber team has developed. The most recent, held at Normanby Hall Scunthorpe in October, was the most successful yet and generated close on 100 business opportunities from the participating companies. It runs a series of other events and training days to support the programme and can provide technology input where this is needed to unlock a commercial opportunity, but most importantly is looking to stay with companies until business benefits are identified and delivered.
The programme is committed to full regional delivery but is part of a national netwok...the world's first industrial symbiosis programme.
It is open to all and FREE to members, being fully funded by Yorkshire Forward (and by BREW monies for the remainder of the regional teams). Please call 01724 297016, mail yorkshirehumber@nisp.org.uk for further information.
