Constructing Excellence in your Region

Constructing Excellence in the East Midlands

The construction industry is of considerable economic and strategic importance in the East Midlands. The effectiveness of the industry's performance will influence the region's ability to operate. Constructing Excellence requires all stakeholders in the industry to engage with the change agenda. The quality of the built environment affects us all and our ability to attract people to work in the industry.

To become an industry of first choice, the East Midlands construction supply chain must invest in training, in new skills and in research and development to make the best of new materials and new technologies. Even more importantly, it must change its culture and the way it does business, by working more effectively in partnership to meet and exceed its client expectations. We should therefore work together to ensure we can be proud of what we build.

East Midlands Constructing Excellence Regional Centre

Constructing Excellence East Midlands Centre has been formed to demonstrate and sell the business case for continuous improvement in process, product and culture. The Centre will link all construction-related bodies and organisations, signposting the East Midlands Construction Industry to best practice knowledge and innovation in the region and across the United Kingdom through the Constructing Excellence Network.

Constructing Excellence East Midlands Centre has one aim:

To make the East Midlands Construction Industry World Class.

The Centre promotes the Rethinking Construction agenda. If the East Midlands construction sector is to become more profitable, increase productivity, reduce accidents and defects, increase predictability and improve customer satisfaction, reduce capital cost and construction time, it must radically change the way it does business. The centre will concentrate on:

The Centre has been formed with the support of The East Midlands Development Agency, Regeneration East Midlands, The Department of Trade and Industry, East Midlands Construction Forum, CITB-Construction Skills and other regional partners.

East Midlands Regional Development Agency

Constructing Excellence in the East Midlands, the industry and associated organisations will support the development of the East Midlands region to achieve the prestigious ambition of being in Europe's Top 20 Regions by 2010, as outlined in the East Midlands Development Agency Strategy: Destination 2010.

"The Construction Industry has a large part to play in the development of the region, being a prime industry that will influence the productivity of our clients, through the services and products the industry provides. We will need our construction industry to be more enterprising, adaptable, knowledgeable, innovative, better skilled, more focussed, more confident with new technology and better able to grasp the business opportunity of tomorrow. I commend the work of Constructing Excellence and all those who are engaged with the programme - we will succeed."

Chairman, East Midlands Development Agency (emda)

The East Midlands Construction Forum

The East Midlands Construction Forum launched in 2003 is the regional focal point for construction. The aim of the Forum is to bring coherence to initiatives designed to improve the industry's performance and assist in identifying and resolving skills shortages. It also supports initiatives designed to change the image of the sector.

"Our immediate goal is to make the Forum a powerful and effective voice for the construction industry in the region and at central government level. Constructing Excellence will play a prime role in our activities. This network will demonstrate the commitment the region has to development and its ability to deliver major productivity improvement in the sector. Companies engaged with the Constructing Excellence agenda will be the flagships of the East Midlands. Initial pioneers have shown that applying the principles of Rethinking Construction to their projects has delivered improvements in productivity, service, safety, quality and time."
