The construction industry has always been slow to invest in IT and this lack of demand from the industry has led many vendors to focus their efforts elsewhere. The construction industry operates on low profit margins and is unwilling to invest in new and unproven software solutions. Software houses that currently serve the industry understand its problems, but are reluctant to invest in developing standards and software without being sure of adequate returns.
However, as the sheer size and diversity of the construction industry means that it accounts for a large percentage of UK expenditure on IT, vendors cannot ignore the industry's needs. Construction uses IT for engineering and design applications, enterprise applications, control, office automation and in-house development and operations. And supporting all of this is the IT infrastructure.
