Welcome to the future of UK Construction
Client attitudes will be key in achieving the most effective and efficient construction industry in the world. This was just one of many messages delivered at "The Big Debate", part of the Constructing Excellence conference held at the DTI Conference Centre, London, on 22nd November. The event, which brought together clients and contractors from public and private sectors across the UK, provided a forum from which construction clients were able to voice their concerns and outline future challenges for the industry. The event also launched the starter Clients Charter, in a bid to educate and empower both frequent and infrequent clients of the industry.
Current methods of delivery, productivity and profitability, competition from abroad, Government targets, the recruitment and retention of a skilled workforce and industry image were all areas that came under discussion, with relation to client roles and engagement.

The enthusiasm for benchmarking using the UK Construction Industry KPIs seems to be turning into a world-wide epidemic! Constructing Excellence has entered into an agreement to help the New Zealand construction industry develop its own set of KPIs based on the UK version.
Interest has spread to Grand Cayman in the Caribbean. Now they have recovered from Hurricane Ivan, Cayman Shores Development, engaged in a multi-million dollar development project, have asked Constructing Excellence to support them by running a workshop so they can benefit from the UK's experience.
Finally, Constructing Excellence was delighted to welcome delegates Jose Pontes and Isabel Januario from the Portuguese organisation IMOPPI (Instituto dos Mercados das Obras Públicas e Particulares do Imobiliário) at the KPI Masterclass in London in November.

South Yorkshire's 2nd annual Construction Industry Exhibition exceeded expectations by attracting more than 1500 people.
With 60 exhibitors at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, in October, visitors could learn about working across the whole supply chain, attend seminars and even try plastering, bricklaying and wallpapering. 100 children from 16 local schools took up a "disaster challenge" to develop irrigation systems and there was an appearance by BBC1's Nick Knowles of DIY SOS!
|
The event was supported by South Yorkshire Construction Best Practice Club and organised by the South Yorkshire Construction Training Group, whose Chairman Paul Atherton said: "This exhibition has highlighted the tremendous breadth of opportunities for successful and rewarding long-term careers in construction to the region, and I hope that many of those who attended will come to work in the industry."
Plans are already afoot for next year's event, building on the two previous successes.
