On 29 July 2010, Samantha Connolly (an environmental and sustainability advisor within the ODA) delivered a brief and informative talk to G4C members at the latest Breakfast Briefing hosted at RPC's Tower Hill offices. The next task group meeting is on September 22. As well as helping members understand the challenges and opportunities of work in the nuclear sector, the group is focused on facilitating collaborative commercial approaches and common standards in procurement etc.

A report issued today by industry groups has highlighted severe flaws in legislation intended to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those working in construction. Tighter rules about site safety were introduced in 1997 to protect the 2.2 million people who work in the UK's biggest industry sector. But the changes have simply upped the costs associated with construction projects without significantly improving safety standards.

Constructing Excellence and CWC are organising a study tour to Japan to see how lean principles have been put into practice in all aspects of construction and more importantly how in this time of severe cuts they can be put into practice in the UK. The tour will be split into two weeks with the first focusing on Infrastructure and the second on Nuclear.

The first meeting of the CE/CCG Asset Management Task Group took place recently. The Group will be considering a cost benefit for early involvement of stakeholders, including those involved in FM and Asset Management. There is lots of anecdotal evidence that such early involvement adds value to the design and construction process but this has never been costed in detail and no assessment has really done to determine when the right time is for such stakeholders to get involved.

The Construction Clients' Group is delighted to announce that it will take over the secretariat of the Strategic Forum for Construction for a year from 1 July 2010. In addition, the CCG will appoint the next chair of the Forum to pick up the reins from Nick Raynsford MP for the period it provides the secretariat. The Members' Sustainability Group has been given the mandate by the Carbon Sub-Group of the Strategic Forum for Construction to develop a project-based assessment methodology for the use of energy. This piece of work has been identified by the Task Group as absolutely crucial if organisations within the sector are to be able to assess the extent to which they are able to respond to the challenge of the low carbon economy in their project delivery.

G4C Award applications are now being invited for the London and South East Constructing Excellence Awards which is due to be held in July. The G4C Award will be presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Construction Industry. The award is open to anyone with less than 5 years experience in the industry and must be actively involved in one of the built environment sectors (e.g property, architecture, construction, engineering).

Vaughan Burnand has stood down at the end of four years of chairmanship of Constructing Excellence and its predecessor body Be. He succeeded Bob White as chairman a year ago to oversee the proposed collaboration with BRE to secure deliver better value for members and improve the financial position of the organisaton. With these tasks achieved he is able to concentrate on other business interests.

This task group is booming. After its launch reception at the House of Commons in January with the Energy Minister, its fourth meeting in March agreed its work programme for 2010. The purpose of the group is to de-mistify the construction challenges (and opportunities) in the nuclear sector, and then to promote all appropriate aspects of integration and collaborative working as the best means to deliver superior performance for all stakeholders.
