More than 500 people from across the North East construction industry gathered last night (Friday, May 8) for the 2009 Constructing Excellence in the North East Awards.

The Awards dinner is the biggest gathering of the construction sector in the region and 520 people from all sections of the industry came together to celebrate successes and excellence.

The Newcastle Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park hosted the event and a total of 11 awards, plus commendations, were presented to projects, contractors and individuals from the Hartlepool, Newcastle, Durham, Seaham, Middlesbrough, Newton Aycliffe, Alnwick, Barnard Castle, Sunderland, Stockton and Gateshead areas.

These were:

Leadership & People Development, sponsored by Northern Counties Builders Federation

The Legacy Award – Sustainability, sponsored by IGNITE Regional Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Communities for North East England
Joint winners:

The award winners will now go on to represent the North East in the national Constructing Excellence Awards against the winners of the seven other regional awards. The UK-wide awards, which were first held two years ago, have been inspired by the success of the North East event.

Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence in the North East, Catriona Lingwood, said: “This year, there are winners from every part of the North East. The region has once again demonstrated its talent, initiative and ability. Excellence in the construction industry is everywhere and the awards were a real celebration of what is good in our sector, here in the North East. In a difficult year for the economy, individuals, teams and organisations have stood up to be counted and helped to shape our built environment for the better and, as a region, we should be very proud of that.”
