Minister for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk MP, visited BRE this morning to launch our new Apprenticeship Scheme. He met the first five apprentices who have been working alongside BRE experts for the last few weeks, gaining a unique insight into fire resistance, detection and suppression as well as learning about the use of materials, test instruments and climatic and environmental testing. Our friends at ConstructionSkills' Construction Sector Network report that preliminary figures show that construction output rose by 0.5%, quarter-on-quarter, in the three months to June 2011. These indicators are based on data from thousands of projects collated from government and industry surveys. While students were breaking down the barriers in central London on this month the Strategic Forum for Construction (SFfC) members, in a meeting only metres away from the protesting students, were hoping to break down a few barriers themselves. In a response to the Government's drive for greater efficiency and lower carbon (production) across the construction industry the SFfC has created five review groups to tackle five key barriers to improved procurement.

A report issued today by industry groups has highlighted severe flaws in legislation intended to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those working in construction. Tighter rules about site safety were introduced in 1997 to protect the 2.2 million people who work in the UK's biggest industry sector. But the changes have simply upped the costs associated with construction projects without significantly improving safety standards.

The first meeting of the CE/CCG Asset Management Task Group took place recently. The Group will be considering a cost benefit for early involvement of stakeholders, including those involved in FM and Asset Management. There is lots of anecdotal evidence that such early involvement adds value to the design and construction process but this has never been costed in detail and no assessment has really done to determine when the right time is for such stakeholders to get involved.
