Minister Mark Prisk launches BRE Apprenticeship Scheme
Minister for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk MP, visited BRE this morning to launch our new Apprenticeship Scheme. MPS win construction computing award again
Representatives of MPS, Carillion and Mouchel attended the prestigious Construction Computing Awards, known as The Hammers, in London on 17 November 2011. Latest market intelligence
Our friends at ConstructionSkills' Construction Sector Network report that preliminary figures show that construction output rose by 0.5%, quarter-on-quarter, in the three months to June 2011. This follows 2 successive quarters of decline. Although this is encouraging, their view is that the second half of the year is likely to be worse than the first.

The Constructing Excellence members' Sustainability Group is progressing with its project to determine whether it is possible to deliver a school retrofit that achieves a 70% reduction in carbon for the same capital expenditure as one that brings a building up to current Building Regulations standards. After ten years of working with and for the School of the Built Environment, University of Salford as a committed Industry Partner and for the last three years as Associate Head of Enterprise and as Chief Executive of the School's Centre for Construction Innovation (CCI) and Centre for the Urban Built Environment (CUBE), Professor Andrew Thomas has left the University of Salford as a result of a change of Direction and focus by the host School of the Built Environment.

UK Industry Performamce Report 2010
2010 sees the twelfth year of publication of the Construction Industry KPIs which have become a mainstay of the industry since their initial development in 1998. These indicators are based on data from thousands of projects collated from government and industry surveys. These enable individual firms to benchmark their performance with other firms, and they also enable us to measure improvement across the industry through this annual Industry Performance Report.

Strategic Forum for Construction: breaking down the barriers
While students were breaking down the barriers in central London on this month the Strategic Forum for Construction (SFfC) members, in a meeting only metres away from the protesting students, were hoping to break down a few barriers themselves. In a response to the Government's drive for greater efficiency and lower carbon (production) across the construction industry the SFfC has created five review groups to tackle five key barriers to improved procurement.

Construction safety laws failing, industry urges rethink
A report issued today by industry groups has highlighted severe flaws in legislation intended to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those working in construction. Tighter rules about site safety were introduced in 1997 to protect the 2.2 million people who work in the UK's biggest industry sector. But the changes have simply upped the costs associated with construction projects without significantly improving safety standards.

Asset Management Task Group
The first meeting of the CE/CCG Asset Management Task Group took place recently. The Group will be considering a cost benefit for early involvement of stakeholders, including those involved in FM and Asset Management. There is lots of anecdotal evidence that such early involvement adds value to the design and construction process but this has never been costed in detail and no assessment has really done to determine when the right time is for such stakeholders to get involved.

G4C Award applications are now being invited for the London and South East Constructing Excellence Awards which is due to be held in July. The G4C Award will be presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Construction Industry. The award is open to anyone with less than 5 years experience in the industry and must be actively involved in one of the built environment sectors (e.g property, architecture, construction, engineering).

VAUGHAN BURNAND STANDS DOWN AS CONSTRUCTING EXCELLENCE CHAIRMAN
Vaughan Burnand has stood down at the end of four years of chairmanship of Constructing Excellence and its predecessor body Be. He succeeded Bob White as chairman a year ago to oversee the proposed collaboration with BRE to secure deliver better value for members and improve the financial position of the organisaton. With these tasks achieved he is able to concentrate on other business interests.

Nuclear Task Group: Update
This task group is booming. After its launch reception at the House of Commons in January with the Energy Minister, its fourth meeting in March agreed its work programme for 2010. The purpose of the group is to de-mistify the construction challenges (and opportunities) in the nuclear sector, and then to promote all appropriate aspects of integration and collaborative working as the best means to deliver superior performance for all stakeholders.
