A: We recommend that the Clubs meet about once a quarter, although the frequency of the meetings is up to the individual Clubs. Some Clubs are meeting once a month, some bi-monthly, but they can change the spacing of meetings at any time. If they feel that monthly is too much then reduce it and likewise if they find that quarterly isn't enough then increase it.
A: Again it's up to the individual Club. Some people prefer breakfast meetings and some prefer evening meetings. We recommend a 4pm start so that it only takes a small amount of time out of people's working day and their evenings. Another benefit of this time of day is missing the worst of the rush-hour traffic.
A: It depends on the contents of the meeting. Most meetings will last about 2 hours, but if they are running a workshop or attending site visits, they may need to allocate a little more time.
A: Anything from 20 to 50. If you have too many members, it becomes difficult to keep the content of meetings relevant for everyone. The idea of the Clubs is that they are small and local, so if Clubs get too big we suggest that they split into two.
A: Ideally the Clubs should represent all disciplines, including clients.
A: This is, again, something that the individual Clubs need to decide for themselves. There are lots of different options, but we recommend a fee of £50 per member for the year as this keeps things nice and simple for the treasurer of the Club and it isn't too expensive for the smaller companies. However, some Clubs are charging considerably more than that. Another option that some Clubs have adopted is a £50 charge for individual membership and £100 for corporate membership.
A: We suggest that the Clubs have at least 3 - a chairman, treasurer and secretary. However, most Clubs opt to have a committee of approximately 6 or 7. Some of these committee members have been given specific jobs - for example press officer, membership officer or events officer, but it is up to the Clubs to decide how many committee members they want and what their roles should be. Obviously the more committee members the Clubs have, the less work each individual has to do, but this needs to be balanced against the fact that too many committee members would mean that nothing would ever get decided upon.
A: Camargue will promote the launch meetings for the Clubs. Press releases will be sent out to the business section in all local newspapers.
A: There is a database that lists all enquiries about the Constructing Excellence Clubs, so names from that list can be used.
A: Every launch meeting varies, but usually there is a presentation (by someone from Constructing Excellence) to explain what the CE is all about, what it is trying to achieve and how the Clubs fit in with this, followed by an expert speaker on a topical issue. There should be plenty of opportunity for people to debate and discuss the presentations given.
A: Ideally 4-6 weeks is enough notice for people to get the date in their diaries. However, we do recommend that launches don’t take place during the summer months (July and August) because of the limited number of people available due to holidays at that time.
A: No. The model constitution has been developed because many members want some formality to the Club, especially since they are paying a membership fee. If the Clubs feel very strongly that they don’t want to adopt it, then all we ask for is a formal letter expressing their intention to set up and run a Club that will address Best Practice issues.
