Sector Specific Programmes

Constructing Excellence will continue to support a number of specific initiatives to engage with key sector groups. These include:

The Housing Forum

The Housing Forum has established itself as the only cross sector organisation covering all aspects of housing construction: private, public and social sectors and their supply chains. It provides a member network of innovators who share knowledge and experience through its demonstrations portfolio and its ad hoc groups.

Its main objective is to bring radical change in housing construction, building on the Rethinking Construction agenda and the Strategic Forum's targets in order to work towards achieving the government targets for Decent Homes, new homes in growth areas, and the regeneration of areas of low housing demand in the North, set out in ODPM's 'Sustainable Communities: building for the future' 2003.

In order to highlight the benefits and barriers involved in current housing construction issues, the Housing Forum liaises with government and industry leaders in commissioning in-house and external projects. These issues have included labour and skills shortages, modern methods of construction, regeneration and sustainability, as well as promoting increased use of partnering and training on long term strategic projects.

Local Government Task Force

The LGTF works as a lobby group for the local government community with various government departments, allied agencies and the construction industry. It actively encourages and assists local authorities to adopt the principles of Constructing Excellence. By close liaison with the ODPM, it ensures best practice principles are applied equally across all local authority procurement activity.

The LGTF commissions and distributes relevant literature, as well as actively communicating with practitioners, senior officials, and elected members via regular newsletters and other appropriate media. By identifying best procurement practice, it aids practitioner and elected member development through a comprehensive education programme.

Local authority demonstration projects account for nearly half of all Constructing Excellence demonstrations.

Infrastructure Task Force

The Infrastructure Task Force will investigate the uncertainties with respect to the provision of the nation's infrastructure to inform continued public-private efforts to effectively scope, plan, finance and execute infrastructure investment commitments. The Task Force will focus on funding issues and processes necessary for the provision of infrastructure. This work is undertaken in the belief that the current political and financial climate can provide important opportunities to creatively restructure and advance the development of, and investment in, infrastructure. This will capitalise on the innovation of potential participants in the process by providing a platform of knowledge from which to develop preferred delivery mechanisms with reference to:

This will also involve working with complementary organisations such as nCRISP.

Buildings and Estates

The built environment industry, embracing construction, housing, property, infrastructure and facilities management, is a vibrant part of the economy as a whole, contributing almost 20% to UK GDP. The industry builds and operates hospitals and schools, roads and railways, offices and homes, creating the environment in which we all live and work. We have much to be proud of; but we also have challenges ahead - and this is where Buildings and Estates will bring real value.

Construction Clients' Group

CCG creates a forum for public and private sector clients to share experiences and to collaborate. It represents clients on the Strategic Forum for Construction and participates in the Forum's various workstreams. We represent clients on a number of industry and Government task groups and we collaborate with a host of organisations also seeking industry improvement.

Alongside different bands of client membership, the CCG also provides an associate membership category.

The IT Construction Forum

The IT Construction Forum (ITCF) supports companies in the construction sector make better use of IT in their business and management practices. It is a service of the government-funded Constructing Excellence initiative.
